On each turn you can choose one of four actions. The objective of the game is to score the most points. In the game you play as a person in charge of a wildlife preserve with the objective of attracting the most and rarest birds to your preserve. Instead I am going to give you a brief introduction into how the game is played. The video game adaptation of Wingspan is pretty much everything you could want from a digital version of the board game.Īs I did a thorough review of the board game a while back, I am not going to go into a deep dive of how the game is played. As I am a big fan of the board game I was definitely interested in checking out the digital version when I was given the opportunity. Well the official digital adaptation of the board game finally released yesterday on Mac, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Since its release there have been a couple video game adaptations on Tabletop Simulator and Tabletopia which just digitally recreate the board game components. I checked out the board game version of the game around a year ago and loved it.

The game succeeds though because it creates an interesting blend of mechanics chock full of strategy and yet still being easier to play than you would expect. A game about attracting birds to your nature preserve might not sound all that interesting at first. It would be DEVASTATING if I have to completely remake literal YEARS worth of my maps and miniatures.Released last year (2019) Wingspan quickly became one of the most popular board games in the industry. Seems reasonable, however, I have sunk a LOT of time into downloading add-ons, map building and miniature building to include “magical” effects and have them saved. That’s almost a full half-hour! VERY aggravating to say the least! I’ve looked through the Steam community and haven’t seen a lot of people run into this issue, I may not be the first, but the ones I HAVE seen suggest that I uninstall and reinstall TTS. After the session, I ended up with around 24 minutes of lost time due to stalling. I would open up my iPhone’s stopwatch function and start the timer every time the game would stall.
That being said, the stalling problem becomes a lot more noticeable while I’m making maps, besides the frustration it causes, those few seconds begin to add up.īeing the dork that I am, I decided to experiment how much time I lost during a 3-hour map building session in Single Player mode. This feat can be made even longer when working inside a digital realm where only one piece of terrain or scatter can be manipulated at once.
Now, this doesn’t sound that bad, however as any DM will tell you, the act of building maps is a creative feat that can take literal HOURS, even using real-world battle maps, tiles and scatter terrain, at least if your DM is as detail oriented as I can be and quite a few of us are I’m sure. However, one has risen to the top in this span of time to become the most ANNOYING G*d damn thing ever to my small list of complaints.Įvery-so-often, the app will stall on my computer for a period of time ranging from about 8 to upwards of 10 seconds, the phenomena will prolong itself if I’m hosting multiple players but even occurs when I’m building maps in single player mode. After using this app for a few years now, I'm become quite familiar with these little "quirks", most are small and excusable and don't really affect the overall experience. The miniatures and maps you are able to create in this app can border on the realm of an actual video game provided, of course, you are willing to put in the time needed to familiarize yourself with TTS's UI toolset and certain "quirks" that it has. The ability to customize certain aspects combined with great community generated content makes TTS a cut above other tabletop apps like Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds (both of which I'm familiar with) to immerse my players with in my Dungeons and Dragons sessions.
